Stories and Prints III - Friends of the Night

Friends of the Night, 2015

Once every year, as the stars tumble out of the night sky, Erebus of the shadows celebrates falling in love when Nyx, goddess of darkness. Their young daughter Aether escapes into a heavenly garden and calls to her friends of the night.

Cats, rabbits, and birds from all corners of the Earth journey to the heavens on this magical midnight.

Stories and Prints II - Reading with Noah

Reading with Noah, 2015

Seven continents, five oceans, one world.

This is how Oceanus begins his story to Noah every night.

Seven continents, five oceans, one world.

But before that, there was Atlantis. A mystical land where rabbits can fly, and fish live in trees. Where birds and dogs dance the night away, and little girls speak to all creatures.

And one day, the people of Atlantis angered Poseidon, God of the sea.

And now there are only seven continents, five oceans, one world.

The Flyway Print Exchange

By Brisbane based artist Amanda O'Sullivan. 2013, silkscreen

I took part in the Flyway Print Exchange Project last year organised by a Melbourne printmaker Kate Gorringe-Smith.
It's an exhibition of original prints created by artists who live along the East Asian-Australasian

Flyway, the path flown by migratory birds from Australia and New Zealand through Asia to their breeding grounds above the Arctic Circle.

Twenty artists, from nine of the twenty-two Flyway countries, created prints inspired by the idea of the Flyway. One print from each edition will then be posted, unprotected, along the Flyway and back, echoing the birds’ journey, adding the impression of migration and distance to the works and referencing the weathering of the migrating birds’ plumage.

The exhibition features two sets of prints: one pristine and framed, the other one worn and weathered, which has been posted without protection along the flyway from New Zealand to Alaska and back to echo the birds’ journeys.

Happy Halloween!

Spectre, 2013
Happy Halloween!!

I've been making tiny etchings for exhibition in Adelaide, South Australia and Hong Kong in November.
Gathering, 2013
I started working on small scale for the exhibition in Hong Kong at first as suggested by the gallery manager Phemie.
I decided to take on board with the idea as I often thought about doing it and also I always admired Rembrandt's tiny incredible etchings.

Small plates are so much fun to work with.
No big commitment or stress, it is easy to make much larger edition too.
Spectre and Gathering are both edition of 50.
I wouldn't have been able to print like that if I was working on usual larger plates.

Yatagarasu, 2013
I sense this is going to be a long series!

The Bird Room

My fellow printmaker Bridget Farmer and I are having an exhibition called The Bird Room opening on Saturday 5 October at Faulkner Gallery in Castlemaine, Victoria.

I'm very pleased that we can finally have a show together after admiring her work so long.

When we first met, Bridget was studying her MFA and I was doing my last year of BFA at RMIT University in 2007, but we really started getting to know each other at Australian Print Workshop in 2008.
She was working there after being awarded her Australian Print Workshop Collie Print Trust Scholarship and I was trying to keep my print practice going after graduating from uni.
Since then we've talking about our love for birds and animals and finally we get to have a show together!
