Stories and Prints IV - The Great Wave

The Great Wave, 2015

Inspired by “Kanagawa-oki name ura”, of Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai, this whimsical piece tells the tale of Kalypso, daughter of Oceanus. She embraces all sea creatures as her friends - particularly fish and lobsters.

A mischievous water nymph, Kalypso calls on a great wave to transport her and her friendly flounder fish to Tokyo.

Caught in her wave, like butterflies in a net, are - chickens from Adelaide, Siamese cats from Taipei, a few English motorists, and Scruffy the Rabbit.

Today was the last day of Call of the Wild at Odd One Out in Hong Kong.
Thank you so much Phemie for making this such a wonderful show and Huda for creating beautiful stories for my prints.

Ceramic!

I've been wanting to try ceramic for a while and last Friday I did!
I've started making ceramic animal figurines as well as functional one with animals.

This is my very first trial in my life so it's quite fiddly but I am having such an amazing time!

I'm figuring out what types of clay would work best for me.
As my first trial, I chose Buff Raku - it's soft and easy to form but it's quite gritty which is quite nice too.
This is still a hand-forming time - I'll get more challenges when it comes to firing and glazing.

I'm loving every second of working with clay at the moment.
I am still making 2D print images - I'll get to it tomorrow. Still having too much fun today!

Gathering

Gathering, 2013
As I've said this countless times previously, I’ve always drawn rabbits.
My existing first drawing was rabbits and my primary school art project was of rabbits. My doodles on my textbooks were rabbits too.
I probably enjoyed drawing their long ears and cute round tails to start with but by drawing them over and over the image of rabbit has become almost like a personal emblem.

After relocating to Australia I found out that rabbits were considered vermin and an environmental disaster- despite also being a domestic pet. In Japan they are fetishised and populate traditional art and craft as well as popular culture.
I thought this difference in two countries was striking and was fascinated by the fact that a tiny cute animal like rabbit can multiply so fast so that it becomes such a threat to people and environment.

I wanted to create an image where rabbits meet under moonlight to make a plan for world domination over us for this print Gathering.

I found one of my first drawings at my dad's house in Japan below.
I was 4? The carrots confirmed me that it is a rabbit.

I also found my rabbits from my primary school project. I think it was grade 5?
It was kind of like a scratchboard method.

As my family say, I haven't changed or improved since childhood after art degree and all.

Happy Halloween!

Spectre, 2013
Happy Halloween!!

I've been making tiny etchings for exhibition in Adelaide, South Australia and Hong Kong in November.
Gathering, 2013
I started working on small scale for the exhibition in Hong Kong at first as suggested by the gallery manager Phemie.
I decided to take on board with the idea as I often thought about doing it and also I always admired Rembrandt's tiny incredible etchings.

Small plates are so much fun to work with.
No big commitment or stress, it is easy to make much larger edition too.
Spectre and Gathering are both edition of 50.
I wouldn't have been able to print like that if I was working on usual larger plates.

Yatagarasu, 2013
I sense this is going to be a long series!

I want more rabbits!

I want more rabbits! original book
I want more rabbits! is a little book about multiplying rabbits I made while I was artist in residence at Australian Tapestry Workshop.

It's a concertina book with original drawings of watercolour and ink.
I want more rabbits! original book
I then decided that I also want to make a digital print version of this because I wanted to multiply these multiplying rabbits.

So I scanned and got my friend and font king Cameron to help me coordinate the books with additional cool English and Japanese fonts.

They are available through me or Sticky Institute or Port Jackson Press in Melbourne at the moment!
I hope they will multiply in different locations soon.

Northern pika

Northern pika
This is Northern pika I drew from Tokyo National Museum of Nature and Science.

This species of Pika is found in Northern Eurasia continent such as Russia, Mongolia, nothern Korea and also Hokkaido in Japan.
They are also known as a living fossil as they are believed to have existed since the Ice Age

Although it looks much smaller than a rabbit or a hare (you could hold a pika on one hand) and resembles more like a guinea pig, Pika belongs to the Lagomorpha order of which hares and rabbits are a part. They have the same number of teeth as that of lagomorphs and have incisors with no canines.

We call Pika Naki-usagi - the whistling or crying rabbit -  in Japan because of their high pitch call.
Male and female make different sounds and they cry even more between March and October in their mating season.

They are vulnerable to the environmental change but are not a protected species, unlike Amami rabbit.
It's probably because their biology is not fully understood as they've only been discovered in 1928.

original sketch of Northern pika at Museum
Drawing animals at museums is great, it's like getting to really know the animals.
Before I started drawing them, I knew nothing of their history, anatomy, their favorite food and how big they really are, the actual colours of their furs and so on and on.
This might sound like an exaggeration but it feels as though it's like re-uniting with my distant cousin I never met or something like that...

Anyway I adore you Northern pika.

Palette works

Surge, 2013
I made a watercolour drawing on palette called Surge made for Exquisite Palette Exhibition 2013 at St Luke Artist Colourmen.
I've decided to have rabbits running from the hole on the palette.
Too many rabbits are never enough.

detail, Surge

Here are other really exquisite palettes made by my friends.

Damon Kowarsky, 2013
Damon Kowarsky's palette is a etching and aquatint print of a view of Darb al Ahmar district in Cairo.
It feels as though I'm looking at an old photograph in a dark room...

Hyun Ju Kim, 2013
Hyun Ju Kim made a beautifully detailed mixed media drawing. It may be hard to see in the photo but all tones are made by layering different colours of fine lines. As always I can't keep my eyes off her drawing of wonderful world of colourful plants, monsters and birds.

St Luke's Exquisite Palette exhibition 2013 opens from 10 April - 8 May 2013

Mammals from Melbourne Museum

Sugar glider, 2012
Mammals from Melbourne Museum is a small exhibition I'm having in February at Japan Information and Cultural Centre in Consulate-General of Japan in Melbourne.

This exhibition will feature six prints and texts about each animal as part of my ongoing drawing project at museums.

This is the first exhibition to present my animal specimen prints from Melbourne Museum as a series.

Stoat, 2012
This project started in 2011 with Damon Kowarsky who suggested going to Melbourne Museum to draw chameleons in order to create a zine called "Talking of a chameleon".
Wayne Longmore, collection manager at Ornithology and Mammalogy section, assisted this project by allowing us to have a close look at animals of our choice.

I'm in Japan at the moment and did more drawings at National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo. I'm looking forward to making prints of these new drawings too.
